At the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) International 2019, I had the chance to meet one of those men. On Friday morning, as I was walking to attend Chief John Buckman’s class on high-intensity instructing, I suddenly stopped dead in my tracks. There was Firefighter (Ret.) Kevin Shea from Fire Department of New York Rescue 1, of the now iconic “Hope on a Rope” photograph. I was awestruck. I can muster the courage to enter environments a large majority of the population would run from, but I could not muster the courage to speak with Firefighter Shea. After the class, when Chief Buckman had me even more energized to teach, I saw Kevin Shea again. I approached him and mentioned how much of an honor it was to meet the man who is a household name for firefighters. He smiled and said, “We were just doing our job.” That’s what it is all about. That’s why we are here.
While an interactive waste sorting game is geared toward kids, the city is targeting confused residents with the Waste Wizard, a search bar tool that allows residents to search items they’re not sure how to recycle or dispose of.
The maxi challenge arrived via an ominous warning from Mama Ru that the past always comes back around again. And just like that, the doors to the Werk Room opened and in walked six of the season’s eliminated queens: Soju, Ariel Versace, Honey Davenport, Scarlet Envy, Plastique Tiara and Abuela Shuga herself. Thankfully for the top six competitors, Ru announced that none of them would be returning to the competition. Instead, each remaining queen would be tasked with making over one eliminated queen and "transforming her into a member of your drag family."

“In Germany, there is a trend for understatement,” Bovensiepen says. “I’ve even seen an M3 with the badge of a 320 diesel. With the B7, the power is there, but nobody sees it.”
"It wasn’t farmers bringing along their chainsaws and hammers… It took a big effort from a lot of people."
The Macon-based organization arose from the chaos that was a defeated state Democratic party. "I don’t talk to the Democratic Party. I don’t talk to [then-Democratic party chair] Mike Berlon. There’s no coordination. Like none. Zero," Bryan Long, the group’s executive director, told us in 2012.
This is just one reason why converted shipping containers are considerably greener than other building types. The cement industry is one of the biggest producers of carbon dioxide in the world. As well as cutting the emissions that would come from a more traditional build, shipping containers make very good use of existing materials that would have otherwise cost the Earth to break down.
Desperate times often call for radical solutions. One thing the world isn’t lacking is shipping containers. There may be up to 40 million shipping containers in the world right now, and experts believe that only six million are currently in use.
"It’s a sanctuary space but also an institutional interface to the city of Los Angeles," Dominic Leong told Dezeen. "The design is really trying to negotiate those two types of presence within the city, and we really thought of the project as a kind of mosaic of a multiplicity of identities."
